i'm currently a postdoc in the social dynamics group at yahoo! research new york. i received my ph.d. from columbia university's physics department,
studying applications of machine learning to image and network data. please see my

this site serves several purposes, from presenting and organizing my current
research and
teaching
efforts to publishing code and tips
that i hope others will find useful. eventually i'd like to get some
mac/linux/unix resources and tutorials posted in an organized format so others
can benefit from the vast amount of time i've spent discovering things.

2008.10.28 css: to modify an element style in a header, e.g. anchors in h1, use h1 a { ... }
2008.10.18 matlab: matlab stores sparse matrices in compressed column format, so loops over columns are much faster than over rows (loops over rows should be implemented as loops over columns of the transpose)
2008.10.17 iphone: to save some disk space, remove old iphone firmware from ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Update, but make sure to keep the latest restore
2008.10.16 shell: to use the tinyurl api, append the url to be tinyed to http://tinyurl.com/api-create.php?url=
2008.10.14 shell: use exec bash in ~/.login to auto-run a bash shell when your default is csh or tcsh
